BARRANCAS DE BUJURON

BARRANCAS DE BUJURÓN

In Bujurón municipal district, 30 km from the city of Toledo, you can find one of the most spectacular, impressive and surprising sites in the province.

The Barrancas de Burujón are spectacular clay cliffs formed as the sides of the valley were moulded into fantastic shapes by the erosion of the wind and water from the river Tagus over sediments aged 25 million years old.

The extension of the red clay trenched area is about one kilometre long, and the highest point can reach 100 metres, as the "Pico del Camrón" does.

Castrejón reservoir is located among the Barrancas, granting the area an even greater beauty and becoming a refuge for numerous bird species.

The environmental richness of this privileged site can be even better apreciated through the "Senda Ecológica de las Barrancas", including several viewpoints from which the spectacular cliffs and their flora and fauna can be watched.

Two types of vegetation can be found in Las Barrancas:

- Riparian vegetation, among which you will find cane (Phragmites australis), bulrush (Typha latifolia), blackberry bush (Rubus ulmifrolius), willows (Salix)
- Mediterranean vegetation, including thyme, rosmary, almond trees, and specially ephedra and junipers.

Typical Fauna includes rabbits, hares, partridges...

Nevertheless the most important group of fauna that can be found in Las Barrancas is the Birds one: storks, ducks, herons, cormorants...
Besides, the Las Barrancas nature site, being a mediterranean type habitat, holds a variety of other endangered bird species such as peregrines, spanish imperial eagle, Bonelli's eagle, marsh harrier, eagle owl, barn owl, kestrel, black vulture.

The Barrancas de Burujón are a hidden treasure often passed by as the road that takes to the area runs partly among cultivated land. To get to Las Barrancas you have to take a track at the PK26 from the main road CM-4000, that goes from Toledo to Talavera de la Reina. The exit to the track is situated on the left side of the road, just a few metres from the crossing to the town of Bujurón.
