The cathedral you see today was commissioned by Fernando III and the Archbishop Ximénez de Rada, who placed the first stone in 1226. The High Mosque of Toledo, demolished by Alfonso VI, was located on this site. At the Museo del Tesoro Catedralicio the visits to Tesoro-Relicario, Sala Capitular, Sacristía, Coro and Capilla Mayor are highly recomended . At the Tesoro Chapel, the Custodia by Enrique de Arfe (XVI century) is exhibited. At the Sacrístia paintings by El Greco (Apostolado and El Expolio) can be visited, as well as paintings by other renowned artists like Goya, Tiziano, Rafael, Van Dyck, Bellini and a "San Francisco de Asís" statute by Pedro de Mena. At the room giving entry to the vestry, another excelent collection of paintings by Velazquez and Ribera can be found. At the Sala Capitular we can find frescos by Juan de Borgoña and all the portraits of the prelates of the Achdiocese. The Capilla Mayor displays and extraordinary altarpiece, created by Enrique Egas, Felipe Birgany, Copín de Holanda and Juan de Borgoña, among others. The presbiterio is enclosed by a wrought iron grille in the best of plateresco style, by Villalpando. The choir displays a wide variety of sculptures by Berrugete, Bigarny and Rodrigo Alemán.
