The Cathedral in Toledo is one of the most enblematic buildings in the city, having been built on the most important Mosque from Toledo's arab period. The building of the cathedral was the result of a joint effort by King Fernando III El Santo and Archbishop Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada. The cornerstone was laid in 1227, being its first architect a Maestro Mateo, who was followed in the work by Pedro Pérez. The front side of the cathedral was finished in 1238 and the last vaults were closed in 1493. By this time, Toledo's cathedral was already one of the most important Gothic Cathedrals in Spain, but its pictoresque superposition of styles is the result of five centuries of unceasing architectural activity, during which a succession of memorial chapels, has been added to the original Gothic structures. |
