VILLAFRANCA DE LOS CABALLEROS LAGOONS. Thsi lagoons systems is situated 2 km northwest from Villafranca de los Caballeros, receiving the water from the river Cigüela. It holds an important amount of fauna and being part of La Mancha Húmeda, has been declared Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The system includes: - Laguna Grande - Laguna Chica - La Laguna de la Sal - La Dehesa encharcable. Laguna Grande, is the most visited one as it si considered a frist class recreational area, representing a refreshing oasis during the summer hot months, and holding an important hotel infrastructure. Laguna Chica, serves as habitat for a wide range of bird species. La Dehesa encharcable, close to Laguna Chica, is the site chosen by numerous birds to nest. La Laguna de la Sal served for many different purposes through the years (salt production...), and its singular character depends on its salts content and the particular vegetation and the bird colonies that nest and breed there. A Nature and Visitors Centre is located in the area acommodating youngsters that spend days here in narrow contact with nature.
